Women Build

Welcome to Women Build – Habitat’s volunteer program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities.

Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. Women Build events have helped to construct more than 1,800 houses.

Underwritten by Lowe’s, Habitat’s Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable housing.

Women Build 2011

12/12/2011 – We made it! The Certificate of Occupancy was been issued for the home, and we held our dedication service on Sunday, December 18th, 2011. Thank you to all of our dedicated supporters and volunteers who made this Women Build such a success.

Wilkes Habitat for Humanity is excited to be involved in our second Women Build project in Wilkes County. This project was made possible through the hard work of our many Women Build committee members and volunteers, as well as through a generous grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. We are very grateful for Lowe’s outstanding support of the Women Build program both nationally and right here in Wilkes County.

To sign up for the Women Build email list, send us an email here.

If you’ve never done any construction before, that’s ok. Most Habitat for Humanity volunteers have no professional construction experience. Our work site leaders and experienced volunteers help teach new skills and walk everyone through the work that is being done each day. We also also need folks to help us organize and bring meals for the volunteers, so there are many ways to help.

Directions to the build site:

255 Dockery Road, Purlear, NC – Click Here for a Map

From Highway 421, take Highway 16 north to the intersection with Boone Trail. Turn left onto Boone Trail, followed by an immediate right onto Old Highway 60. Follow Old Highway 60 for approximately 2 miles – Dockery Road is the first left past West High Acres (the sign for Dockery Road is currently bent and difficult to see).

Arbor Grove United Methodist Church has graciously offered their parking area to us on days when we expect more volunteer vehicles than the site can manage. We will make clear in our email updates when we plan to use Arbor Grove. Please click here for a map and directions to the church from your home.
