Habitat for Humanity International ranks as the sixth largest homebuilder in the United States with 6,032 closings in 2010, according to Builder magazine’s annual survey. Each year, the magazine compiles information from U.S. builders and lists the top 100.

Habitat’s Builder 100 ranking has continuously improved through the years. For the first time last year, we ranked in the top 10 as No. 8 on the list with 5,294 closings. Habitat’s 2010 home closings increased due in part to our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative program in which many affiliates have purchased and rehabilitated foreclosed properties to turn them into affordable housing in partnership with low-income families and to strengthen neighborhoods affected by the current housing market. Habitat helped an additional 2,327 families with repairs to their homes in the United States.

Wilkes Habitat for Humanity currently has 2 homes under contruction, with a third to begin later this month. Thank you to all of the great Habitat volunteers and donors who make this ministry possible.

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $55,000 grant to Wilkes Habitat for Humanity for the organization’s Women Build program. Wilkes HFH will use the funds to construct their second Women Build home in Wilkes County as part of the organization’s affordable housing ministry.

This will be the second Women Build home constructed in Wilkes County, the first having been completed in 2002. Recent interest in the Women Build program has grown since Wilkes HFH celebrated Women Build week in May 2010 with two days of work projects.

In the months since Wilkes Habitat for Humanity held our 2 Women Build workdays back in May, there has been a growing interest in the community in organizing and building another Women Build home right here in Wilkes County (the first Women Build home was completed in 2002).

In response to this growing interest, the Women Build Committee has organized the Power of 10 peer fundraising campaign – an initiative to raise money for the next Wilkes Habitat for Humanity Women Build House.

The plan involves individuals asking 10 friends to participate in the fundraising effort by donating at least $10 to the Women Build house, and encouraging them to ask 10 of their friends. The plan works when the cycle of giving continues. The Power of just 10 individuals joining this campaign and each engaging 10 more peers to the same is immense. We invite you to join the Women Build Movement to eliminate poverty housing for children through the Power of 10.
